I sometimes get a little too excited and spend money on something that I later find out is maybe not exactly the right thing. Yeah, don't tell my husband (hi honey). So now I'm thinking that in the future I'll try to rent a piece of equipment first to test drive it before I buy it. There are a bunch of camera equipment rental options.
For example, I'm pretty sure the next lens I want to buy is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens. Yummy! I'm currently living with my inexpensive 50mm lens right now but I love shooting with a 50mm so I'm pretty sure the L lens will be my upgrade...at over $1300 I want to make sure it is perfect for me.
So for $85/week or $130/2 weeks I could test drive the lens and make sure I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Seems completely reasonable.
Check out LensPro ToGo for lens rental. Their rates including shipping both ways and the rental period starts when the lens is delivered so it seemed like the easiest rental place! I can't wait to have a few extra bucks to give it a try!
UPDATED TO ADD: Thanks to Tammy for suggesting two other lens rental options: LensRentals.com and Rentglass.com.

The lens I've been lusting after for awhile is set to arrive from LensProtogo.com tomorrow! I love that I can test it before taking the plunge.

Michele, what lens did you rent? PLEASE come back and tell us what you thought of the process!

I know of two other lens rental services that I hear are also good: lensrentals.com (which seems to specialize more in Canon glass) and rentglass.com (which seems to have a broader selection for the Nikon folks).
I haven't used either service yet, but I'm seriously considering renting the Sigma 18-200/3.5-6.3, since I think that'll be my next lens purchase.
As an added bonus, lensrentals.com also rents camera bodies, speedlights, monolights and studio strobe kits, Pocket Wizards, and all sorts of other goodies.

I can recommend http://www.tryandbuylens.com/index.php Check them out. Good service with low rental prices for Nikon Canon lenses.
Good luck.
