In the Fall the mirror in my Canon 5D detached in the middle of a newborn session. I only had a digital rebel backup which was actually hard for me to use because I've gotten so use to my full frame happy place with the 5D. So I rented a 5D until my camera was fixed and was happy when my camera came back to me with no charge on the repair since it was way outside of warranty.
Then I heard of another friend's camera doing the same then. Then another.
Turns out to be a pretty common problem.
So Canon released a Service Notice noting that this is a "rare" problem but that camera that experience this issue will be repaired free of change. So if it happens to you, at least you'll know that you won't be charged for the repair. Now that the 5D is my backup camera and I've already had the repair I have high hopes that I will get to stay in my happy place.

Thanks for sharing this. I hope it doesn't happen to my baby but, if it does, at least now I know what to expect.

I know this comment isn't directly related to the post in question (except perhaps to say I am insanely jealous that you have a 5D Mark II) but I found your blog to say and I have to tell you that it is by far one of the most helpful sites I have found. Honest, informative, accurate, refreshing. Thank you. You really make me feel like I can pursue and realise my dream of being a childrens photograher. Would love to come and play at your cool loft some time but I think the plane ticket from Australia might not be considered a 'reasonable' business expense by my husband. Anyway, thank you so much. Can't wait to read more about your adventures.

First of all, a looooong overdue thank you is in order for all of the insight that I have gained from your info. So, thank you! :)
Here's my quick question - was your 2009 pricing brochure a template? I am thinking that the answer is yes - as I believe that I've been another photographer with the same thing? Am I crazy? Just revamping some things for 2009 - and I would like to put something together for pricing. Thanks!

Just found your blog and L.O.V.E it!! I am just getting my feet wet on the business side of things and learned a TON reading this blog. I have an opportunity to buy some pettiskirts wholesale and was looking for some advice on sizes that cover a good range. My business is in newborn/baby/children. Thanks!

My 5D, purchased November 2005, separated from its mirror after a fall while hiking in Hawaii last week. My new 70-200mm L IS lens/sunshade took the brunt of the thump as did my hip -- not the camera. Upon my return to Ann Arbor, I contacted Canon service. Canon arranged for UPS both ways, repair/mirror replacement (not a reglue) -- no charge including full calibration of camera. Lens is under warranty and it will be checked for damage also at no charge.
Am certainly gratified by the immediate frank response from Canon -- but I'm also angry that the "defect" was not posted to purchasers of USA imported cameras for recall. So it would have been costly -- on the other hand Hawaii is a long way off from Michigan. Moral of the story (perhaps a variant of Murphy's Law)is buy the new model but keep the old model and carry it for unforseen emergencies.

This is no longer my active email address. Email sent to the account is forwarded to my new address but I encourage you to update your address book. Im using a less spam friendly email address now as this provider tends to have problems with accounts getting hacked quite frequently and I get a lot of spam on this domain too.
