I had so much interest in my Associate Photographer Toolkit I thought I would create a page with all the items as a great "Starter Kit" for an aspiring photographer. I consider these my essential items for my natural light portrait photography business. Since I specialize in individual child photography I have found the 50mm lens to be the perfect focal distance but your needs may vary.
Canon 5D Mark II
I'm a Canon girl. No reason in particular - just what I started on so I just kept going on that road. So the new Canon 5D mark II is the camera that I use. It is also the camera that I leased for my Associate Photographers so we would all be standardized. I wanted to make sure we were able to share information so it was important to me when we were all using the same camera.
Canon 50mm 1.4 Lens
For the last year or so I've pretty much lived with the 50mm 1.4 lens on my camera. The focus on it is great and I love the 50mm focal distance. While I now shoot mostly with my Canon 50mm 1.2L lens now, I do find the focus on it is a little fussy and honestly, other than build quality, I don't really think it is worth the major price difference and certainly not for an aspiring or newly pro photographer.
The other items are kinda more of the odds and ends that you need...
Backup Battery, CF Cards (I like 4 GB cards), a reflector and a translucent reflector.
I buy almost all of my photography equipment from B&H Photo. They are very reputable, reliable, and you can read lots of reviews before you decide what to buy!!!
